My first reaction was that she'd gotten some sort of bug bite. Then she turned around and I saw three more across her chest. That was one hell of a bug, I thought. I called her over and took a closer look. About that time Debra woke up and walked over.
In her sleepy, sleepy voice she said: "oh shit, chicken pox."
We immediately turned on the computer (a very, very unusual thing on Shabbat), searched for pictures and confirmed our fears. The little girl has chicken pox, despite her vaccine, which we have now learned is only 70% effective. We snapped a couple of photos and sent them to Debra's cousin Ross who's a pediatrician. (Isn't this technology stuff amazing!) He called us from his vacation to tell us we'd sent him picture perfect shots of chicken pox. He told us not to worry too much.
At bedtime, we counted 31 pox, so we're holding our breath for tomorrow morning. She may have a mild case (as is usual for people who've been vaccinated), or she might be out for the week. We're headed to Croatia on August 11th, and we're told she'll be better by then.
But of course, the incubation period is 10-21 days, so if Silvia's vaccination didn't take we'll be somewhere on the Dalmatian coast when she starts sporting the spots. That will make for an interesting trip!
